Interview Tips
- Research the company as much as possible — we can't emphasize this enough. Gather as much information as possible about the industry and the products the company makes.
- Know why you want to work with the company that is interviewing you. Dress appropriately for an immediate favorable first impression. Don't underestimate this. Be sure you are well rested and your appearance is clean and neat. Remember to shine your shoes, wash your hair, iron your clothes and don’t chew gum.
- Know where you are going and how long it will take you to make the trip at the specific time of the day required. If you are unsure take time to travel to the interview site once before your interview. Arrive at the interview location roughly 10 minutes before your scheduled meeting.
- Shake hands firmly and don't take a seat until offered. Sit upright, be attentive and always maintain eye contact with the interviewer.
- Remember your interviewer's names and titles.
- Relax and be yourself but remember to remain professional during and after the interview. Don’t forget the person sitting on the other side of the desk could be your future employer.
- Allow the interviewer to describe the position and its responsibilities early in the interview so you can show how your experiences, training, education and skills can be applied and valuable in the position being offered. If you can think of ways to help the company solve problems, you are more likely to be hired.
- The interview should be a two-way communication. Don’t be afraid to ask relevant questions during the interview and develop a rapport with the interviewer.
- Prepare for questions you will likely be asked and be honest in your responses. Talk in a firm, confident voice and always present a positive attitude. Be a good listener as well as a good talker. Smile!
- Don’t bad mouth your present or former employers.
- Let the interviewer bring up salary first. Know how long the interview is expected to last. Be sure not to make appointments immediately following your expected completion time.
